It’s been hailed as a movement against greed and corruption but the Occupy Wall Street Movement also appears to have a bash Western society mentality. And what could be a better representation of the West than the white man? One blogger wrote the following,
Occupy Wall Street’s General Assembly operates under a revolutionary “progressive stack.” A normal “stack” means those who wish to speak get in line. A progressive stack encourages women and traditionally marginalized groups speak before men, especially white men.
She goes on to write,
Anything claiming to represent the General Assembly should be subject to the same governing principles, which would include a progressive stack. If this is a revolution of white men, it will not succeed.
Whether she realizes it or not, the blogger betrays her motivation for supporting the movement. It clearly has nothing to corporate greed or corruption but is a movement of revenge against white men for past grievances. Her real fear is that the movement will be over represented by a particular group not that the movement won’t have legitimate or attainable goals.
Looking at the “official” declaration by the movement shows that is largely anti-Capitalist and anti free markets. Most of their declarations are just vague complaints about alleged behavior that I would doubt any of the movement could defend with data. Many of the others are misdirected in the sense that they should be against the government and politicians and not the corporations or Wall Street. For instance,
They have taken bailouts from taxpayers with impunity, and continue to give Executives exorbitant bonuses.
They have poisoned the food supply through negligence, and undermined the farming system through monopolization.
The corporations did not give themselves the bailouts nor can a corporation institute a monopoly. It was the government that gave taxpayer money to failing businesses yet there seems to be no outrage from them as to the governments role in all of this.
The declaration also states that,
corporations do not seek consent to extract wealth from the people and the Earth
This displays monumental ignorance to the point of being blatantly dishonest about how business works. Corporations do not extract wealth (outside of the aforementioned bailout money). Corporations create wealth. They provide goods and services that require people to be employed by them. All of these people from CEO to janitor are there to increase their wealth. Some have better practices than others but the worker is always free to leave and go where treatment or pay is better.
Another gem of idiocacy is the following,
They have held students hostage with tens of thousands of dollars of debt on education, which is itself a human right.
Most student loans are held by the government. The idea that a corporation can hold a student hostage for debt is a complete lie. The government on the other hand can imprison you if you do not pay what they say you owe. In addition, education is not a human right. Any good or service that someone else must provide for you is not a right. In fact it would be a violation of the other person’s rights if they were forced to educate.
There is nothing that I have heard from this movement or anyone supporting it that make it look the least bit intellectual, practical or reasonable. It’s looking more and more like a wannabe hippie throwback movement for lazy and ignorant people who are mad and don’t know why and feel entitled to wealth they have not earned.
Below are some videos of the protesters which demonstrate some more of the anti-West anti-Capitalist viewpoints. I cannot say if they are representative of the whole but they are especially interesting.
