The following video of Matt Damon chastising a Reason magazine reporter and cameraman has gone around the internet for the past few weeks. Damon has become a hero for many left-wing bloggers and reporters.
Reason posted a response to this article which demonstrated that teachers are not underpaid compared to the average middle class worker in America. Something that I have not heard anyone else mention is the fact Damon’s own argument is self defeating. He accuses the interviewer of over-simplifying the issue when she asks about incentives but Damon then argues that teachers teach out of passion, not for money. If that is the case then why is he there fighting for their compensations and benefits? If they teach out of passion only, then giving them more money and better benefits by his own argument will not improve the quality of teaching. Since we are in a dire economic crisis, the argument could be made that we could afford to cut teachers salaries and benefits and, since they teach out of passion, we will not lose the number or quality of teachers. Of course that would only be true if Damon were correct.
